| Hi! My name is Joakim Andersson and I will be your language teacher and cultural guide throughout this introductory course. Sweden is a country in the middle of Scandinavia in Northern Europe. The language spoken here is closely related to Norwegian and Danish; and because of that, Swedish is understandable also for them. So by learning Swedish, you'll open the gate to whole of Scandinavia. Let's get started! |
| Wherever your destination may be, manners are a must! And in this respect, Sweden is no different. So in our very first lesson, we'll be taking a look at a survival phrasethere is no excuse not to bring with you to Sweden. Again, I'll stress this over and over, a little a bit of the language can go such a long way! |

| This phrase could be used at any time to thank someone. Now, in Swedish, there are other ways to express one's gratitude. There are more formal and more casual ways to do this. |
| First, let's take a look at a casual way. In Swedish, the casual phrase for expressing gratitude is Tackar. |

| This is roughly equivalent to “thanks” in English. |

| This phrase is used among friends or in other casual situations. |
| On the other hand, for very special occasions, when someone goes about and beyond the call of being kind, when someone is extremely generous, or for any other time you are extremely grateful, we have the following phrase to express extreme gratitude. |
| In Swedish, the formal way of expressing gratitude is: Tack så mycket. |

| The first word, tack, means “thank you.” |

| So literally, the phrase means “thank you so much” in Sweden. |
| Politeness levels are normalized for the most part, so it really doesn't matter which phrase you use when thanking. When expressing gratitude, all these phrases can be used in all situations. There are also other ways to express gratitude by adding new words to the phrases we just learned. An example is to use the word tack followed by the phrase tack så mycket, and it becomes more like: Tack tack så mycket. |
| As for me, I would use this when I receive a gift and to express both gratitude and surprise at the same. |
