Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 9 - Learn Swedish Using Swedish With This Unbelievably Simple Phrase. |
There will be many times when the Swedish around you or coming at you is fast and furious and you may not catch it all or any of it. In instances like this, asking the speaker to say it again can prove the difference between understanding a crucial piece of information or spending the rest of the day trying to figure out just what was said. So that you can get a feel for the language and tune your ear, you should just practice the phrase over and over. |
In Swedish, “Once again, please” is Kan du säga det igen, tack? |
Kan du säga det igen, tack? |
Let’s break down by syllable: Kan du säga det igen, tack? |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Kan du säga det igen, tack? |
The first word, kan, means “could.” |
This is followed by du, which in Swedish is “you.” |
du |
du |
So, to recap here, we have kan du. Literally, this means “could you.” |
Let’s take a look at the next word, säga, which means “say.” |
säga |

Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: säga. |
säga |
This is followed by det, whicn in Swedish is “it.” |

Then comes igen, which means “again.” |
igen |
igen |
igen |
And lastly, we got the word for “please” which is tack. |
At times, even repetition of what is said isn’t enough to understand the speakers as the words are still to fast. For instances like this, you can use the phrase, “Slowly, please.” In Swedish, this is Kan du tala långsamt? |
Kan du tala långsamt? |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Kan du tala långsamt? |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Kan du tala långsamt? |
The first part of the sentence, kan du, means “could you” and is the same as the previous phrase. |
This is followed by tala, which means “speak.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: tala. |
tala |
This is followed by långsamt, which in Swedish is “slowly.” |
långsamt |
långsamt |
långsamt |
So all together, we have Kan du tala långsamt? |
Literally, this means “Could you speak slowly?” |
To use these phrases together, you just say “Kan du säga det igen, tack…” and add “långsamt?” which means “slowly.” |
“Kan du säga det igen, tack, långsamt?” |
In English, it’s common to say, “Once again, slowly please,” but in Swedish, this would sound just a little too demanding than you might want to appear, even though this is a little softer than just demanding. This could be used any time, with friends or in a business meeting. |
