| Father's Day originated in the United States during the 1910s, when a woman wanted to honor her father who took care of her and her siblings all on his own. In 1924, the president supported the idea, and since 1966 has been celebrated on the third Sunday of June, which is also a public holiday in the US. It’s a holiday that has no religious basis, and sometimes it gets criticism or kritik for being commercial. |
| Father's Day came to Sweden in 1931, with Mother’s Day as its model. In 1949, a Nordic committee or nordisk kommitté was formed with a vision to spread Father's Day across the country. Father's Day is celebrated in Sweden on the second Sunday of November so that it isn't celebrated too close to Mother's Day. When the holiday first came to Sweden, many seniors initially had negative feelings towards the day, and people thought it was fawning over the dad too much. Both Father's Day and Mother's Day have been criticized because they exclude children who don’t have one or both parents. |
| Since the beginning of the initiative, the mass media, or massmedia, and schools have played a big part in spreading both Mother's Day and Father's Day. Children are encouraged at school to make, for example, their own greeting cards or gratulationskort. Mother's Day and Father's Day are celebrated in pretty much the same way, but Father's Day is a little simpler. A common way to celebrate Father’s Day is by bringing them breakfast in bed with coffee, cake, flowers, and a gift. |
