INTRODUCTION |
Kellie: Hi everyone, and welcome back to SwedishPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 24 - Will This Swedish Restaurant Meet Your Expectations? Kellie here. |
Vicky: Hej! I'm Vicky. |
Kellie: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to give specific details about allergies, food preferences and so on, as well as about some prefixes in Swedish. The conversation takes place on the phone. |
Vicky: It's between Frida and a receptionist. |
Kellie: The speakers are strangers, so they’ll use both formal and informal Swedish. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Receptionist: Vi ska göra vårt bästa! |
Kellie: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Frida: Hello, I would like to reserve a table for a group of five. |
Receptionist: Yes, that's fine. |
Frida: Also, I’m a vegetarian. Do you have lots of vegetarian dishes? |
Receptionist: Yes, we have a variety of salads, grilled vegetables, and so on. |
Frida: I went to a restaurant yesterday, and their grilled vegetables were inedible. I hope yours are better! |
Receptionist: I haven’t heard anyone complain about them being bad at least. Don't worry! |
Frida: That's good. By the way, I'm allergic to gluten as well. I hope that won't be a problem. |
Receptionist: I understand. We’ll try to put something together. |
Frida: How lucky. The people last night were so rude and the restaurant was unclean. I hope I won't be disappointed with you. |
Receptionist: We will do our best! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Kellie: Vicky, is vegetarianism popular in Sweden? |
Vicky: I think vegetarianism is a relatively new thing in Sweden and didn't exist until recently. |
Kellie: I guess it was because the long winters made milk products and meat hard to avoid. |
Vicky: That's true. But nowadays approximately one out of ten people in Sweden are vegetarians. But it is still unclear how people define themselves since most vegetarians eat milk products and eggs, but others refrain from these things completely. |
Kellie: And what about vegans? |
Vicky: Vegans, or veganer in Swedish, are still quite rare. |
Kellie: And what about food allergies? What are the most common? |
Vicky: Some of the most common food allergies in Sweden are different kinds of nuts, gluten, milk products, and eggs. |
Kellie: Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Kellie: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Vicky: sällskap |
Kellie: which means “company.” |
Vicky: sällskap comes from the verb sälla, which means “to join.” |
Kellie: You can use this word when speaking about the group of people you are with, for example, when going to a restaurant. |
Vicky: Right. For example...Vi är ett sällskap av fem personer |
Kellie: which means “We are a group of five.” |
Vicky: You can also use sällskap when speaking about a person or an animal being good or bad company. For example, Min hund är bra sällskap på kvällarna |
Kellie: “My dog is good company in the evenings.” |
Vicky: Sällskap in the sense of a group of people is mainly used formally, but when it means “company,” as in good or bad company, it’s used both formally and informally. |
Kellie: Can you give us one more example using this word? |
Vicky: Sure. For example, you can say.. Jag har haft bra sällskap hela semestern. |
Kellie: ..which means “I've had good company all vacation.” Okay, what's the next word? |
Vicky: flertal |
Kellie: which means “multiple.” |
Vicky: flertal is a combination of the words fler and tal, |
Kellie: which mean “several” and “number” respectively. You can use this word when speaking about several things or multiple things without mentioning an exact number. |
Vicky: flertal is mainly used as a formal expression. In informal situations, you can use the word flera. |
Kellie: Vicky, can you give us an example? |
Vicky: For example...Ett flertal nya elever började på skolan förra veckan, or Flera nya elever började på skolan förra veckan. |
Kellie: These two examples mean the same thing, “Multiple new students started at my school last week.” The difference is the first sentence is formal and the second one is informal. |
Vicky: Another example is..Flertalet nyhetskanaler rapporterar om den kommande snöstormen. |
Kellie: .. which means “Multiple news channels are reporting about the upcoming snowstorm.” Okay, what's the last word? |
Vicky: rätt |
Kellie: which means “dish.” |
Vicky: Actually, the word rätt has many translations. |
Kellie: It can be translated as “correct,” “right,” “proper,” “fairly,” “okay,” “authority,” or “dish” depending on which way the word is used. |
Vicky: You can use the word rätt in the sense of a “dish” or “course” when speaking about different food courses or dishes. |
Kellie: It’s used mainly at restaurants and in formal settings. |
Vicky: Often the word mat, which means “food,” is put in front of rätt. So, it will be maträtt. |
Kellie: Which means “food course,” or “dish.” |
Vicky: For example, Vilken maträtt tycker du mest om? |
Kellie: “Which dish do you like the best?” |
Vicky: Another example is...Vad serverar ni för kötträtter idag? |
Kellie: .. which means “What kind of meat dishes are you serving today?” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Kellie: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to give specific details about allergies, food preferences and so on, as well as about some prefixes in Swedish. Vicky, how can we explain that we have an allergy in Swedish? |
Vicky: You can use the following patterns. First, you can say...Jag är allergisk mot ... |
Kellie: It means “I’m allergic to..” After it just add what you’re allergic to. |
Vicky: Another option is..Jag är plus what you are allergic to, plus allergiker. |
Kellie: This expression means “I am” plus what you are allergic to...plus “allergic.” Ok, can you give us some examples? |
Vicky: Sure, for example...Jag är allergisk mot nötter. |
Kellie: “I’m allergic to nuts.” |
Vicky: Jag är glutenallergiker. |
Kellie: “I’m allergic to gluten.” |
Vicky: You can also use one more expression. Jag kan inte äta.. |
Kellie: Which means “I can’t eat..”. After that, just say what you can’t eat. |
Vicky: For example...Jag är muslim så jag kan inte äta fläsk eller skinka. |
Kellie: “I’m a Muslim so I can’t eat pork or ham.” Ok! The next topic of this lesson is prefixes. |
Vicky: In Swedish, prefixes are used at the beginning of a word and can consist of one or several letters. |
Kellie: In this lesson we'll focus on the most common prefixes in Swedish and their meaning to help you understand them in context. The first prefix is... |
Vicky: Inter- |
Kellie: which means “in between.” For example... |
Vicky: Intergalaktisk, which means “intergalactic.” |
Kellie: The next prefix is… |
Vicky: O which means “not.” For example..Oartig |
Kellie: meaning “impolite.” |
Vicky: Another example is oätbara meaning “inedible.” The word ätbara means “edible” and by adding the prefix o- you change the meaning to “inedible.” For example, in the dialogue we have Jag var på en restaurang igår, och deras grillade grönsaker var oätbara. |
Kellie: Which means "I went to a restaurant yesterday, and their grilled vegetables were inedible." Ok, what's the next prefix? |
Vicky: Post- |
Kellie: It means “after” or “post” in English. |
Vicky: Postmodern, which means the same as the English “postmodern.” |
Kellie: The next prefix is... |
Vicky: Pre-. As you can probably guess, it means “pre,” or “before.” For example...Prelimininär |
Kellie: which means “preliminary,” or “provisionary.” |
Vicky: Two more widely used prefixes are re- |
Kellie: “re-, repeat, again” |
Vicky: and -trans. |
Kellie: “trans, over, beyond, through” |
Vicky: For example..Repetera |
Kellie: “repeat” |
Vicky: And Transsexuell |
Kellie: Meaning “transsexual.” |
Outro
|
Kellie: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Vicky: Bye! |
