Lesson Transcript

Hei, jag heter Elin. Hi everybody! I’m Elin.
Welcome to SwedishPod101.com’s “Svenska på 3 minuter”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Swedish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verbs att gilla and att älska.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use att komma, the fourth verb in our series dedicated to the most common Swedish verbs.
att komma means "to come" in Swedish, and we use it a lot! So let’s go! Låt oss börja!
Imagine a friend of yours is having lunch at a café and he calls you to ask - Har du lust att komma hit? That means "Would you like to come over here?"
So supposing you want to go, you will say, Ja, jag kommer! That means "Yes I’m coming!”
[slowly] Ja, jag kommer.
So let’s break down this answer.
First we had-
Ja which is simply "Yes."
Then jag, which is "I" in Swedish
After that we have kommer, which is the present tense of the verb att komma.
So, all together it is Ja, jag kommer.
In Swedish, att komma is exactly the same as "to come."
It is a very common verb that you should be careful not to mix up with att gå, which only means "to go to", as we’ve seen before.
Att komma is often used to suggest an invitation to someone. If you are organizing a party, for example, you can invite your guests by asking them kommer du till festen i kväll? That is "are you coming to the party tonight?"
To answer this question, you can add something after this verb, as in Ja, jag kommer med några vänner. Here you said "Yes, I am coming with some friends." The common expression to say you are coming with your boyfriend or girlfriend is Ja, jag kommer med min flickvän. or Ja, jag kommer med min pojkvän. flickvän is “girlfriend” and pojkvän is “boyfriend”.
The verb att komma is also often used as motivational advice or as an order, as in kom igen! "Come on!" Or Kom hit! That is, "Come here!"
You can add the word igen “again” or tilbaka “back” after att komma to create sentences like "I'll come back tomorrow". In Swedish, this is jag kommer tilbaka i morgon!
Now it’s time for Elin’s Insights.
Like in English you can also use the verb att komma to say "Come in!" if you invite someone to enter a room, for example.
In this case it will be Kom in!
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb att komma to ask people to join others!
So now, our lessons series about common Swedish verbs is over, and from the next lesson, we will jump into some very important question words!
Do you know how to ask "What" questions in Swedish? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Svenska på 3 minuter lesson.
Vi ses!
