Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 15 - Restaurants: Asking for the Check in Swedish. |
Today, we’ll cover getting out of the restaurant. First, you may have to get ahold of the staff. Again, you can accomplish this by saying ursäkta. |
Ursäkta. |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Ursäkta. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Ursäkta. |
This means “Excuse me.” |
Once at your table, you can ask for the check. In Swedish, “Check, please” is Notan, tack. |
Notan, tack. |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Notan, tack. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Notan, tack. |
The first word, notan, means “the check.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, notan. |
notan |
This is followed by tack, which in Swedish is “please.” |
tack |
Now, if you’d like to tell them how good the food is or if you’re eating with someone and you want to let them know how good you feel about the food, you can say Tack, det var mycket gott. |
Let’s break down this phrase and hear it one more time, Tack, det var mycket gott. |
Tack, det var mycket gott. |
Now, when you finish the meal, the sad part comes, to pay. If you are with a woman and the case is that you’re a man, you can offer to pay the bills for both of you like a gentleman, but it is not expected, so don’t worry. In a bigger party, each pay for oneself, but if you are among friends, maybe one pays it all and then the other people in the party pay him back afterwards. This method is basically used if everyone wants to get out of there quickly. |
Me and my friend often go to a local restaurant to eat pizza and talk about what has happened that week. When you get food you usually hear smaklig måltid, which means “enjoy your meal.” The accurate response to this would be thank you and, of course, the thanking doesn’t end there. When your plates are being put away, you will get the question, Smakade det bra? |
Smakade det bra? |
Which means “Did it taste good?” |
Now, if you have nothing to complain about, then you just say - Ja tack. Det var mycket god, which means “Yes, thank you. It was very good.” |
