Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 17 - “How much is it?” in Swedish.
Today’s phrase is something for all of you shoppers out there. Today’s phrase is “How much?”
In Swedish, “How much?” is Vad kostar det?
Vad kostar det?
Which literally means “What cost it?”
Let’s break it down by syllable: Vad kostar det?
Now, here is it once again, Vad kostar det?
Shopping at the market at the meadery, depending on your spending habits, this may be an extremely-high frequency phrase. The most rudimentary way of using “How much?” is pointing at something while saying Vad kostar det här? But let’s try and build this up a bit, shall we?
Let’s start with the expression “How much is this?” which in Swedish is Vad kostar det här?
The first word, vad, means “what.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: vad.
vad
This is followed by kostar, which in Swedish is “cost.”

Then comes the här, which we covered in an earlier lesson, meaning “this.”
det här
det här
det här
Looking at the word for “this” warrants a look at the word for “that” which is det där.

det där
The phrase, “How much is that?” is Vad kostar det där?
Vad kostar det där?
Let’s break this down by syllable: Vad kostar det där?
Now, let’s hear it once again, Vad kostar det där?
Do you remember when we covered “please” in our previous lesson, when you felt a little hungry and woke up to that Swedish hotdog stand? Now, you ordered your hotdog and need to know how much you owed the guy in apron. Use the phrase “Vad kostar det?” that we covered in the beginning of this lesson and you will get the price. Remember to learn how to count in Swedish though. If you don’t understand the answer you get, just look up in the sign with the prices.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so lycka till, that means “good luck” in Swedish. Ok, here we go!
