Lesson focus

Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 21 - Riding the Bus in Sweden.
The bus is an important means of transportation. However, before you get on the bus, you probably want to confirm if the bus is going to your destination. You can accomplish this by asking, “Will this bus go to…?” and then add in a destination. In today’s lesson, we’ll use Stockholm Central Station.
In Swedish, “station” is station.
Let’s break it down by syllable: station.
Now, let’s hear it once again, station.
Our location is Stockholm Bus Station, but for this particular station, which actually exists in real life, the proper name is “Stockholm Central Station” Stockholms Centralstation.
So in Swedish “Will this bus go to Stockholm Central Station is?” is Går den här bussen till Stockholms Centralstation?
Går den här bussen till Stockholms Centralstation?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Går den här bussen till Stockholms Centralstation?
Now, let’s hear it once again, Går den här bussen till Stockholms Centralstation?
The first word, går, means “go.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, går.
går
This is followed by den här, which in Swedish is “this” which we covered in the previous lesson.
den här
den här
So to recap here, we have Går den här…
Literally, this means “Goes this…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, bussen, which means “the bus.”
bussen
bussen
This is followed by till, which means “to.”
till
till
And this is followed by the location, which in this sentence is Stockholms Centralstation.
So all together, we have “Går den här bussen till Stockholms Centralstation?” which literally means “Does this bus go to Stockholm Central Station?” In this lesson, I want to talk to you about the public transportation. In Sweden, there are different companies running the bus in different regions of the country and they don’t have the same prices or the same system, so you might wanna check out the local company. In Stockholms, they don’t accept cash in buses anymore due to robberies, so if you don’t have a ticket, you’ll be refused to ride in the bus.
There are several ways to buy a ticket. Either you buy it from the vending machine in most of the bus stops or where you take the train or a store that might sell tickets. You can also buy with a text message from your cellphone. I must stress this because you most likely won’t enjoy being refused of being let on the bus.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so lycka till, that means “good luck” in Swedish. Ok, here we go!
“Will this bus go to...?” - Går den här bussen till ... ?
Går den här bussen till ... ?
Alright, that's going to do it for today. Remember to stop by SwedishPod101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. When you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.

Hej Adolf,

Vad tråkigt att höra. (I'm sorry to hear that.)

Har du tittat på "My Stockholmpass" och "Kulturarvskortet"? (Have you looked at My Stockhompass and Kulturarvskortet?) De erbjuder också rabatter. (They have discounts too.)

Ha det bra!

Hej Yoshihiro-Richard!

In Swedish we don't say "riding busses" (rida bussar), we say "åka buss".

So your sentence woudl be "Jag gillar att åka buss för sightseeing".

I hope you have a great week! Jag hoppas du har en jättebra vecka!

Hejsan Yolande!
