Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 26 - Riding the Train in Sweden Part III. |
Sometimes, when you’re on the platform, you might want to confirm if the train is going to your destination. We can accomplish this by asking the person waiting or the person working for the train company. “Will this train go to…” followed by a destination. In today’s lesson, we’ll use Malmö Centralstation like we did in our previous lesson. Once on the platform, you can use the following phrase to verify you’re getting on the right train. |
So, in Swedish, “Will this train go to Malmö Central Station?” is Går det här tåget till Malmö Centralstation? |
Går det här tåget till Malmö Centralstation? |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Går det här tåget till Malmö Centralstation? |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Går det här tåget till Malmö Centralstation? |
The first word, går, means “goes.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: går. |
går |
This is followed by det här, which in Swedish is “this.” |
det här |
det här |
So, to recap here, we have Går det här… |
Literally, this means “Goes this…” |
Let’s take a look at the next word, tåget, which means “the train.” |
tåget |
tåget |
This is followed by till, which in Swedish is “to.” |
till |
Till |
Then we add our destination, which in today’s lesson is Malmö Centralstation, and we are all set. |
So all together, we have Går det här tåget till Malmö Centralstation? |
Literally, this means “Goes this train to Malmö Central Station?” |
In Sweden, the long-distant trains have a bistro carts, sleeping cart, and also radio and wireless internet. Be sure to check with SJ, the Swiss railway company if any of these features are available on your ride. Something very important is to never ever let your luggage out of sight even for a microsecond. Foreign people have come to me asking me to watch their luggage when trying to find which platform they should go to. This is not how you want to do it. Of course, I’m so nice so I didn’t steal their stuff, but there are people that do. Also, beware of pickpockets on this huge railway station. |
