Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 28 - Finding Places in Sweden. |
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you a phrase that will help you track down that specific something you’re looking for. Today’s phrase is “Where can I get…?” or “Where can I buy (something)?” First, we need that something, so let’s use the word frimärken, which means “stamps.” |
Let’s break it down by syllable: frimärken. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, frimärken. |
frimärken |
In Swedish, “Where can I buy stamps?” is Var kan jag köpa frimärken? |
Var kan jag köpa frimärken? |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Var kan jag köpa frimärken? |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Var kan jag köpa frimärken? |
The first word, var, means “where.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: var. |
var |
This is followed by kan, which in Swedish is “can.” |
kan |
kan |
So, to recap here, we have var kan. Literally, this means “where can.” |
Let’s take a look at the next word, jag, which means “I.” |
jag |
jag |
Then comes köpa, which means “buy.” |
köpa |
köpa |
Next, we have the thing you want to buy, in this case, frimärken, which means “stamps.” |
So all together, we have Var kan jag köpa frimärken? |
Literally, this means “Where can I buy stamps?” |
Now, to ask for a different item, we can just replace the word for stamps with any other word and the phrase works just fine. Let’s try souvenirs. |
In Swedish, “Where can I buy souvenirs?” is Var kan jag köpa souvenirer? |
Var kan jag köpa souvenirer? |
The only thing that changes is the thing you’re looking for. In this case, it’s souvenirer. |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, souvenirer. |
souvenirer. |
This phrase will come in handy when searching for a specific item and asking people trying to help you locate it. Know that you’re able to ask. You’re going to get an answer. As we’re running out of time, we’ll have to cover that in the next lesson. |
This phrase is essential when trying to find something. Maybe you need medication and have to ask for that or maybe you’re at a famous site and want to buy souvenirs. Use this phrase and you’ll be all set. I use this when I’m lost in a new city and want to get something important that I need for my stay. |
