Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 29 - Looking Around Locally. |
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you a phrase that will help you find the place you’re looking for. Today’s phrase is “Is there a (something) near here?” First, we need something, so let’s use the word affär which means “store.” |
Let’s break it down by syllable: affär. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, affär. |
In Swedish, “Is there a store near here?” is Finns det en affär i närheten? |
Finns det en affär i närheten? |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Finns det en affär i närheten? |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Finns det en affär i närheten? |
The first part, finns det, means “is there.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: finns det. |
finns det |
This is followed by en affär, which in Swedish is “a store.” |
en affär |
en affär |
So to recap here, we have - Finns det en affär… |
Literally, this means “Is there a store…” |
Let’s look at the next word, i närheten. This means “nearby.” |
i närheten |
i närheten |
So all together, we have - Finns det en affär i närheten? |
Literally, this means “Is there a store nearby?” |
Now, to ask for a different item, we can just replace the word for store with any other word and the phrase works just fine. Let’s try “hotel.” |
In Swedish, “Is there a hotel nearby?” is Finns det ett hotell i närheten? |
Finns det ett hotell i närheten? |
The only thing that changes is the thing you’re looking for. In this case, it’s hotell. |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: hotell. |
hotell |
This phrase will come in handy when talking with taxi drivers or other people trying to help you locate a desired item. Now that you’re able to ask, you’re going to get an answer. As we’re running out of time, we’ll have to cover that in another lesson. |
Today’s phrase is essential for staying in Sweden when you don’t know where things are located. Maybe if you get lost, this is a crucial phrase to find your way back to the hotel or the hostel. |
You could also replace the word with the name of your hotel or the place you want to find to get more specific. Join us next time to learn how to handle the directions. |
