Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 5 - How to say Goodbye in Swedish. |
Today, we'll introduce some phrases for saying "goodbye." |
A parting expression that can be used for all occasions is Hej då, which literally means "Hello then," but can be considered equivalent in usage to the English expression “goodbye.” |
Hej då |
Hej då |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Hej då |
Now here it is again: Hej då |
Let’s take a look at the components. The first word, hej, means “hello.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: hej. |
hej |
This is followed by då, which in Swedish is “then.” |
då |
då |
Literally, “hello then” but translated as “goodbye.” |
When parting or saying goodbye at night, there is the greeting god natt. |
god natt |
Let’s break it down by syllable: god natt. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, god natt. |
Let’s take a look at the components. |
The first word, god, means “good.” |
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: god. |
god |
This is followed by natt, which in Swedish is “night.” |
natt |
natt |
So, god natt is the same as "good night" in English. |
In Swedish, a more casual way of saying “goodbye” is “Hej hej.” |
Hej hej. |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Hej hej. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, Hej hej. |
An English equivalent to this would be the casual “buh-bye.” This phrase is used among friends and in other casual situations. |
Sweden is a country with many foreigners who speak Swedish as a second language. A common mistake seems to be to say hej då twice as a parting greeting. Polite as Swedish are, we always say goodbye, but only once, so a tip for you listeners out there, just to say this phrase once. |
