You are right, the word "middag" (dinner) could be added to the sentence, making it: "Min familj äter middag tillsammans varje kväll." (My family eats dinner together every night.) This would be the correct translation for the English.
It is also possible to just say "Min familj äter tillsammans varje kväll." (My family eats together every night.) since the "night" would show that it would be the last meal of the day.😇

Why is "dinner" middag, but in the example it's tillsammans?

Do you mean that the word "dinner" in Swedish is missing?
You could add it, it would then be: Min familj äter middag tillsammans varje kväll.
But, because the sentence already has "kväll" (evening) in it, you don't need the dinner in the sentence, unless you want it. 😇
